Math by the yard

first_imgBy Wayne McLaurinUniversity of GeorgiaMost lawn fertilizer is sold in bags that cover 5,000 squarefeet, or a rectangle that’s 50 feet by 100 feet. But if your yardisn’t 50-by-100, how do you know how much to use?You need a ballpark figure of how many square feet each area has.The best way to get that is with a map.To map your yard, you’ll need something to write on, something towrite with and the longest tape measure you can find. Awell-rewarded assistant would be extremely helpful. This may be agood time for the kids to see that math can be useful.Make the map a rough sketch with measurements for each area. It’seasiest to start at a fixed object: the house, a fence or a curb.Move from one area to the next, showing the measurements of thedriveways, walkways, decks, buildings and fences as well as thelawn and garden.Make a mapTransfer the measurements to scale onto graph paper. Separate theareas into approximate rectangles, triangles or circles. Forexample, divide an “L” shaped lawn area into two rectangles andadd the calculated areas. If your triangular area isn’t a 90-degree triangle, divide itinto two right triangles and add the calculated areas. For asemicircular planting bed, figure the area of the full circle, then divide by two.The formula for the area of a rectangle is length times width. The area of a circle is twice the radius (a line from the edge tothe center) times 3.14. The area of a right triangle is one-halfthe base times the height. And you thought high school geometrywas useless. Not rocket scienceBreak down an irregularly shaped area into a combination ofgeometric shapes. Figure the area of each shape and add themtogether. You may have to fudge a little. It isn’t rocketscience, but you do want a good estimate.Take a copy of the map when you shop for lawn seed, fertilizer, weed barriers and other items sold in quantities based on area.(Add compass directions and a brief description of soilconditions to your map and you’ll have a useful tool for choosingplants, too, and designing your landscape.)Many bright people have a hard time calculating volume, such asfiguring out how much mulch it will take to topdress a bed.First figure the area. Then divide the area by 12 (the number ofinches in a foot) to find out how many cubic feet it will takefor 1 inch of mulch. Multiply that by however many inches ofmulch you want to add.Use this formula to see how much topsoil you’ll need to fill araised bed, too.Buying by the bagMost gardeners buy soil amendments, compost and mulches by thebag. Usually, these are measured in cubic feet. Some, however, are listed in dry quarts, most commonly in a 20-quart bag, orroughly three-fourths of a cubic foot. (There are about 25.75 dryquarts in a cubic foot.)Bags are the cleanest and most convenient way to transport thiskind of product. But it’s not the cheapest. You can buy larger quantities loose by the cubic yard. There are27 cubic feet to a cubic yard (length times width times depth, or3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet).Bulk quantitiesYou can usually pick up a yard of compost, mulch or topsoil forless than half the price of bagged products. It’s messy, and youneed a truck with an open bed.Bulk quantities can be delivered, but there’s usually a10-cubic-yard minimum. That’s a fairly stupendous quantity, theequivalent of 270 cubic-foot bags.Doing the math isn’t hard and will help you to be not only abetter gardener but a savvy shopper, too.For more garden math and formulas, see publication, “ConversionTables, Formulas and Suggested Guidelines for Horticultural Use”(pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubcd/B931.htmor pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubs/PDF/B931.pdf).(Wayne McLaurin is a horticulturist with the University ofGeorgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.)last_img read more

Cops & audits

first_imgGiven the LAPD’s history, department brass can’t be too careful. Unfortunately, it seems like they’re not being careful enough. The challenge now is to move swiftly to fix problems that have been identified. IT’S been a bad week for the Los Angeles Police Department, as least as far as audits are concerned. First, City Controller Laura Chick revealed that the department is still using wasteful, 1950s-era methods of managing its finances. And now an internal audit reveals that the LAPD’s anti-gang units aren’t managed much better. In 20 percent of the cases sampled, evidence in gang cases was not properly recorded. The information in these filings, including Miranda responses and approval for strip searches, are the sort of safeguards that exist to prevent abuses such as the ones we saw in the Rampart scandal. And while no one thinks these lapses are deliberate, they could, in certain circumstances, undermine a prosecution – or enable a culture of corruption to fester. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Small business tax cut never promised to offset minimum wage hike Wynne

first_imgTORONTO – A tax cut for Ontario’s small businesses will not fully offset the impact of an increasing minimum wage, the premier said Wednesday as business groups criticized the provincial government for not providing enough support to deal with the hike. While the province had said for months that help for small businesses was on the way, Wynne said measures revealed in the province’s fall economic update were not meant to fully balance out the impact of the Liberal government’s plan to raise minimum wage to $15 a hour.“There was never a commitment to offset the increases in minimum wage,” Wynne said. “I was very clear that that was not something that we were going to be able to do, but we want our small businesses to be strong. We want them to be able to thrive. So that’s why we’ve put a number of supports in place.”The province will cut the corporate tax rate for small businesses from 4.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent effective Jan. 1, 2018, the same day it increases its minimum wage from $11.60 to $14. The government’s plan will eventually see minimum wage jump to $15 an hour by Jan. 1, 2019.The province will also designate that one-third of its procurement spending on goods and services will come from small and medium-sized businesses by 2020. And it will spend $124 million over three years to help companies with fewer than 100 employees who hire youths aged 15 to 29. The government will pay incentives of $1,000 for each worker hired and another $1,000 for each worker retained for at least six months by a small business.Wynne said the government will have to assess the impact of the wage increase as it continues to roll out.“When I talk to those business owners they talk to me about job retention, they talk to me about loyalty and quality of work and all of those things that are really important to a business,” she said. “So I think they would say that there’s a net benefit to paying their employees well.”Minister for Small Business Jeff Leal said the minimum wage hike will have some positive benefits for small business, he said.“We do know that people who make minimum wage take those dollars and re-invest them instantaneously back into the economy,” he said. “Many of the businesses they spend that money at are small businesses in the province of Ontario.”But some business groups said the government’s supports fell short.Jocelyn Bamford, founder of the Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers, said her group was “stunned” that the fall economic statement offered what she characterized as little help for businesses to adjust to the new minimum wage after saying for months support was on the way.“We wonder if the government is in denial of the damage they will cause the economy or if they just don’t care about jobs in the province,” Bamford said in a statement. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business said small business owners are very frustrated, very angry” with the government over the planned wage rise, which it urged the province to slow down.“They still have the time to put the brakes on this,” said vice president Plamen Petkov. “Do a full economic analysis. Get it right. Determine what is the right amount and what is the right timeline to increase the minimum wage and then go ahead with it.”Meanwhile, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce said it was shifting its focus to the 2018 spring budget where it thinks the government could offer further supports for business.“We think the impact of this new legislation will be felt pretty quickly in the new year,” he said. “We need to be able to address some of those concerns or else we’re putting ourselves in a very challenging position … we need to look forward to the budget to see how we can contend with some of those new cost burdens.”A number of studies conducted by third parties have estimated the minimum wage increase will slow the number of jobs produced by Ontario’s economy in the coming years. The province’s economic watchdog, the Financial Accountability Office, has estimated more than 50,000 people could lose their jobs due to the minimum wage increase. And an analysis from the Keep Ontario Working Coalition concluded over 185,000 jobs could be impacted by the hike. However, many economists support the government move, saying hiking the minimum wage boosts economic activity and increases people’s purchasing power.last_img read more
