Elizabeth Alvarez was live at the Jackie Robinson YMCA to check it out.“RBI brings kids together in a non-competitive environment to teach them the fundamentals of the game, and as they get better, they progressed to whatever level they want” said Michael Brunker, Executive Director of Jackie Robinson Family YMCA.These kids are learning “How to catch a ball, how to bat” says Caesar, who’s going into 5th grade. It’s a free program sponsored by Major League Baseball. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 are also learning much more then just the fundamentals.“I’m learning teamwork and learning how to speak up,” said Nuri Gargonnu who enrolls in the program every summer. On top of that, the program brings families together.“My husband and I both have businesses. He works full-time. You’re tired and everything, but the beauty of being here for your kids is seeing the fruits of your labor, just being right there for them,” said Makena Gargonnu who’s the mother of Nuri and another boy enrolled.“We encourage the families of…children in our program to become a member and with that membership you can use that entire facility,” said Brunker. The executive director added that, right now, the RBI program is only in the summer. But stay tuned! The YMCA wants to try and continue this free baseball program into the fall. August 13, 2018 Posted: August 13, 2018last_img read more
