The FRC has given institutions until the end of the month to declare their support.Employment relations minister Edward Davey underlined the importance of long-termism among shareholders with regard to takeovers, adding that the government is committed to tightening up the Takeover Code as part of its current review. Solutions may include “higher merger fees or a pre-notification requirement for some deals”, he said. Also attending the conference were outgoing HSBC chairman Stephen Green, Cable & Wireless chairman Richard Lapthorne and Severn Trent chairman Sir John Egan. last_img read more

State Street will run national pension fund

first_img State Street will run national pension fund Show Comments ▼ whatsapp Monday 1 November 2010 9:12 pm whatsapp Sharecenter_img The new national pension scheme for workers with no retirement provision yesterday said it had appointed State Street to administer its funds and was seeking managers for five investment mandates. The National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) said US group State Street will provide administration and custody services for 10 years.Boston-based State Street is one of the world’s largest money managers for institutions and earns about 38 per cent of its revenues outside the United States.NEST also outlined five funds to invest in equities, bonds and cash as well as a diversified multi-asset vehicle, for which it is looking for fund managers.“NEST Corporation this week expects to advertise to appoint fund managers for a range of investment mandates,” it said. The defined contribution pension scheme is a major strand of pension reforms aimed at tackling a lack of adequate pension savings and could manage pension accounts for up to eight million workers. Its chief executive, Tim Jones, said last Wednesday the scheme, could grow to £100bn in the next 30 years. The arrival of the more flexible NEST scheme comes as industry experts warn that the state pension age will need to rise further, partly because people are living longer. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeTotal PastThe Ingenious Reason There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney WorldTotal PastMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStorySerendipity TimesInside Coco Chanel’s Eerily Abandoned Mansion Frozen In TimeSerendipity Timesmoneycougar.comThis Proves The Osmonds Weren’t So Innocentmoneycougar.comTaonga: The Island FarmThe Most Relaxing Farm Game of 2021. New Google handset in Carphone Warehouse

first_img whatsapp Share CARPHONE Warehouse has today confirmed it will exclusively stock the new Google-phone, as revealed in City A.M. in October.Industry sources say Google is experimenting with its distribution model after releasing the previous Nexus model through a deal with carrier Vodafone in the UK.Google’s initial distribution model, which sold the handset exclusively through its website, was heavily criticised by users who had nowhere to direct questions. Google found its website swamped with complaints and was eventually forced to stock the phone in carriers’ stores to overcome the problem.Carphone Warehouse chief operating officer Andrew Harrison said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the Carphone Warehouse is working with Google to offer such a strong product exclusively to our customers.”The Nexus S – the first phone to run on the latest version of Google’s Android platform – will feature a contoured screen the firm says will fit the shape of a user’s face, as well as limiting glare. It will also come with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows the phone to read information from “smart” objects by touching the handset to anything embedded with a special microchip. The phone, manufactured by Samsung, will be available free with a contract. The Nexus One, built by HTC, failed to make a splash when it was released earlier this year, but Google’s Android software is now growing faster than phones powered by Apple or RIM.The release of a successor shows the Californian firm is committed to developing Google-branded phones as well as pushing its Android software. It is desperate to control the mobile advertising market, which rival Apple has made a significant push into, recently releasing a new iAds platform. Food prices soar to new high

first_img FOOD prices have surged above the peak they reached during the 2008 crisis, the United Nations (UN) revealed yesterday. The 2008 food crisis provoked food riots, the toppling of at least one government, and plunged over a billion people into hunger. And the UN’s food price index averaged 214.7 last month, a record high that surpassed the 213.5 mark of June 2008 when prices jumped to a 30-year peak. The index measures monthly price changes for a food basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar.“I am feeling less optimistic than I was in November – we have not had much good news,” said Abdolreza Abbassian of the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO).Nobel economics laureate Gary Becker has estimated that a 30 per cent rise in food prices over five years would cause a 20 per cent fall in living standards in poor countries. And the FAO estimated that domestic staple food prices in developing countries increased by 48 per cent in real terms during the 2008 food crisis. While Abbassian does not expect a repeat of the 2008 riots, he fears high prices could be here to stay. “High prices are not going to go away and there is a strong possibility that they might remain high for two years,” he said.Sugar, cereal and oil and fat prices experienced the sharpest jumps. Sugar and cereals both rose by 6.7 per cent in the index from November to December.Extreme weather conditions and the surge in oil prices are partly behind the rise in the food index. Recent floods in Australia, which have covered an area the size of France and Germany, have hit the supply of wheat. And earlier in the year droughts and fires in Russia and Ukraine, also top wheat producers, harmed supply, pushing up prices. In September the supply was damaged further after the Russian government banned wheat exports.
