Talking in Different Tongues at Excelsior Artz Preparatory School

first_imgNadine Taylor, one of the teachers at Excelsior Artz Preparatory School, with some of her pre-school students. Excelsior Artz Preparatory School (EAPS), one of South Florida’s oldest and accomplished private schools, is blazing a new trail with its bilingual program.   Founder, Kayann Baugh-Toney, had a dream over 20 years ago to remove academic limitations on children and expose them to a variety of lessons in fun, engaging ways.  She envisioned standards that change people’s view of students’ abilities, raise expectations, empower parents and shine a light for God. As a result, Excelsior’s students have achieved excellence in academia and beyond. Evidence of that is their performance in local competitions, such as last year’s Spelling Bee. Excelsior made a clean sweep, taking first place in all grade levels (one to five), above grade level performance on Standardized Tests, such as the Stanford Achievement Test, and more. Expanded education model Realizing that the global workforce and society is constantly evolving, Excelsior recently expanded its educational model to include a bilingual program focusing on Spanish. It officially launched the initial stage of the program last academic year, when it changed instructional methods and frequency of its classes for students in all grades.  The success was measured by student’s level of enthusiasm and performance.   Committed to producing bilingual learnersEAPS is fully committed to its goal of producing bilingual learners. Recently, it got a license to educate two-year-olds.Classroom discussions and activities in this and all preschool classes will be facilitated in Spanish for half of the daily program. Students from Kindergarten through grade eight will receive Spanish instructions three times per week.   Baugh-Toney, whose parents are Jamaican, is confident the program will be successful. “I used the same instructional model on my own two kids. As a result, my three-year-old and five-year-old are fluent in their Spanish speaking skills and emerging in their Mandarin speaking ability. They have expanded their familiarity with many cultures outside of the USA. No one can tell that they are not from a Latin speaking home,” she said,last_img read more

Rhythms of Africa set for a January performance at Miramar Cultural…

first_imgFormer Third World Percussionist Willie Stewart will lead children from Somerset Academy and 15 professional international artists and musicians in an Epic Percussion Power! The journey that began eight years ago at Miramar Cultural Center returns on January 20 for two shows, 3 PM and 8 PM, following capacity-crowd performances at Miami’s Arsht Center, Ft. Lauderdale’s Parker Playhouse, and Broward’s Bailey Hall.Transformative power of musicOnce again, “Reggae Ambassador” Willie Stewart, former lead percussionist and co-director of the international group Third World, will demonstrate the transformative power of music, showcasing the talents of 25 musical novices from Somerset Academy who have trained rigorously throughout the autumn. Included in their preparation are sessions with professional musicians, singers, and dancers to provide not only context to the music, but additional on-stage excitement to captivate audiences and bring them to their feet.Rhythms of AfricaRhythms of Africa is a musical journey that describes the movement of ancient rhythms sprung from the souls of vibrant cultures and carried by hand and heart from Africa to the Caribbean, South America, and the New World. It is truly the rhythms of the Diaspora, seasoned by time, cultivated and rooted by generations of pilgrims. This presentation of the show will feature guest artists Khristine Alicia (“The Voice of Culture”), Saxophone Legend Jesse Jones, Maestro Leroy Romans on keyboards, Nicole Yarling (“Lady of Blues Violin”), “The Voice of Sweetness” Selena Serrano, and many others. Audiences should be prepared to participate — sing, dance, clap, and turn the entire auditorium into a single stage.Embrace Music FoundationThe program is a presentation of Embrace Music Foundation, a Broward-based non-profit corporation with a mission to restore, preserve, and fortify the impact of music — education, appreciation, and performance — in schools and communities, and to amplify its role in the development of children and families.“People who watch these kids during the workshops see their incredible development, so that in no time at all, when the performance comes around, their whole lives have changed for the better,” Willie Stewart notes. “Music is the soul of humanity, the universal language, timeless and eternal — shouldn’t it be central to our children’s lives? It’s all about the music. It’s all about the children.”last_img read more

Benefits of the Fiancée Visa for Parents with Minor Children or…

first_imgUNITED STATES – Under the “Immediate Relative” law, the minor child of a foreign spouse qualifies as a “Step-child” and can be sponsored by the U.S. Citizen, as long as the marriage to the child’s parent took place before the child turned age 18.Yet, if the child is just one day over age 18, they lose the ability to obtain residency from the Step-parent.So, what happens if a couple is planning to get married but has not yet done so before a child turns age 18? And what if the couple has not even met until the child is over 18? Tragically, in some cases, children are not able to immigrate along with their parent and must often wait in long immigration visa lines for years once their parent obtains a Green Card, to join them in the U.S.K- 1 Finance VisaIn many instances, the K-1 Fiancé Visa is a perfect solution for U.S. Citizen sponsorship and can be the key to enabling stepchildren to immigrate to the U.S. along with their parent, when they would otherwise be unable to do so.Most people know that the K-1 Visa Fiancé Visa is used by U.S. Citizens to bring a foreign fiancé to the U.S. in order to get married within 90 days and file for Residency to get a Green Card. But many don’t know about the hidden benefits of the law, which allows minor children of the foreign Fiancé to qualify for Residency, when they would not otherwise be eligible to under regular Family immigration rule for “Immediate Relatives” (Spouses, Minor Children and Parents).Under the K-1 Visa, minor children of the Fiancé, under age 21 are eligible to be issued a K-2 Visa, which allows them to accompany their parent to the U.S. and obtain a Green Card along with the parent, up until they reach age 21. In this case, there is no requirement that their parent and stepparent marry before the child reaches age 18!Years ago, the K-1 Visa was great because it would expedite the process to bring a fiancée to the U.S. in only a few months so that the couple would not have to be separated for long periods of time. However, these days, the K-1 process takes almost as long as a spousal Immigrant Visa, 8 +months or so, making it less attractive. As such, the usual advice to U.S. Citizens these days is simply to get married to the foreign fiancée in their home country, then file the spousal petition and once approved, the foreign spouse will become a Resident upon entering the U.S.ProblemsHowever, in cases where the foreign Fiancé has one or more children over age 18, but under age 21, the K-1 (Fiancé) and K-2 (dependent) visas are a wonderful solution to overcome the problems caused under normal Immigration regulations in establishing the requisite Stepparent/Stepchild relationship before the child turns age 18. In this case, as long as the K-2 child enters the U.S. before age 21, he or she continues to qualify for a Green Card. This visa is only available to Fiancés and their minor children under age 21 of a U.S. Citizen (not Resident Green Card holder) and is only for those who are outside the U.S. and have not overstayed previously in the U.S.last_img read more
