Bakery Canada Bread Co to pay special dividend of 8 per share

TORONTO, Ontario — Canada Bread Co. Ltd. said Tuesday that it will pay a special dividend of $8 per share.The bakery, which is 90% owned by Maple Leaf Foods Inc., said the payment will be made Jan. 6 to shareholders of record on Dec. 30.Canada Bread recently closed the sale of Olivieri Foods, its fresh pasta and sauce business, to Spanish-based Ebro Foods S.A. in a deal valued at $120 million.Trading in Canada Bread shares was halted pending the dividend announcement.Shares in the company were up seven cents at $74 on the Toronto Stock Exchange before the halt was imposed. read more

Canadian Alex Harvey finishes 17th in 15km cross country World Cup

LILLEHAMMER, Norway — Canada’s Alex Harvey finished 17th in the 15-kilometre World Cup cross country race Saturday while Norway’s Sjur Roethe skied to gold.Roethe completed the race in 36 minutes 34 seconds — six seconds ahead of fellow countryman Didrik Toenseth. Russia’s Denis Spitsov was third.Harvey, of Saint-Ferreol-les-Neiges, crossed the finish line in 37:54.5. The 30-year-old Harvey was coming off his first podium finish of the season Friday, when he finished third in the 1.6-km sprint.In other Canadian results Saturday, Andy Shields of Thunder Bay, Ont., was 61st and Russell Kennedy of Canmore, Alta., was 64th.The Canadian Press read more
