Despite Deadly Prospects Elon Musk Wants To Go to Mars

first_img There’s a 70 percent chance Elon Musk will move to Mars. The tech entrepreneur—one of three iconic figures interviewed for an Axios HBO documentary series—hopes to someday ride one of his SpaceX rockets to the Red Planet.“I’m talking about moving there,” Musk told Axios co-founders Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen in an interview that aired Sunday. “We’ve recently made a number of breakthroughs that I am just really fired up about.”The idea of humans colonizing and terraforming Mars is “science fiction,” according to Bill Nye.Last week, the science communicator and TV presenter suggested that modern technology just isn’t up for the task. Nor is our neighboring planet—with an average temperature well below freezing, and a general lack of food or water.“And the big thing,” Nye added: “There’s nothing to breathe.”Musk remains undeterred, though. His aerospace firm recently snagged its first private astronaut, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, and renamed the Big Falcon Rocket “Starship.” It also set a date—Jan. 7, 2019—for NASA’s first test of the unpiloted Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft. Those accomplishments, however, pale in comparison to what Musk envisions for the future. In less than a decade, humans could take off on a voyage to Mars. But the adventure of a lifetime won’t come cheap; ticket prices are forecast to cost “around a couple hundred thousand dollars” each.Still, Musk shrugged off the idea that a cosmic cruise would be “an escape hatch for rich people.”“Your probability of dying on Mars is much higher than Earth,” he said. “Really, the ad for going to Mars would be like [Sir Ernest] Shackleton’s [supposed] ad for going to the Antarctic.“It’s gonna be hard. There’s a good chance of death, going in a little can through deep space,” Musk continued. “You might land successfully. Once you land successfully, you’ll be working nonstop to build the base. So, you know, not much time for leisure. And once you get there, even after doing all this, it’s a very harsh environment, so … there’s a good chance you die there.“We think you can come back, but we’re not sure,” Musk admitted.None of that seems to scare the 21st most powerful person in the world and 54th richest person on the globe.“There’s lots of people who climb mountains,” he told Allen. “Why do they climb mountains? Because people die on Mount Everest all the time. They like doing it for the challenge.”Musk is featured alongside Christian evangelist Franklin Graham and Microsoft founder and advocate Bill Gates in the fourth installment of Axios’ limited documentary series.Catch up on the news-oriented specials via HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand, and HBO’s partner streaming platforms.More coverage on Geek.com:Elon Musk’s Cannabis Controversy Sparks NASA ProbeSpaceX Rehearses Recovery of Astronauts During Ocean LandingsSpaceX Nails First West Coast Falcon 9 Rocket LandingWhy Is Rocket Science So Hard?
