TV and Movies Digital Media 0 Share your voice The Mandalorian is a big-budget series produced by Jon Favreau, which follows a lone gunfighter on the outer reaches of the galaxy. Lucasfilm Disney’s live-action, big-budget Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian will be available at launch when the company’s Netflix-like Disney Plus service rolls out later this year. “We’re trying to make it look like Star Wars — a lot of visual effects, a lot of editing,” Executive Producer Jon Favreau said of his work now that shooting of The Mandalorian has finished. He spoke Thursday at an event in Los Angeles unveiling Disney Plus.A short featurette about The Mandalorian, shown to investors gathered at the Disney studio lot, featured the Mandalorian bounty-hunter character walking across a gray, snowy landscape near an alien outpost. He holds out a beeping tracker with a blinking red light, and the scene cuts to the character entering a bar with drums pounding. In the featurette, Favreau said the series starts with the bounty-hunting Mandalorian tracking down quarries. “This is a character you’ve never met before and period of time you’ve never seen before,” Favreau says. The story takes place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi. High-profile originals like The Mandalorian are a crucial selling point for Disney as it attempt to launch a Netflix rival from scratch. After years of putting streaming in the back seat to protect its big-budget blockbusters and lucrative TV model, Disney has made streaming its top priority this year, even restructuring the company around it. It’s the highest-profile example of traditional Hollywood going to extreme lengths to fortify against competition from digital powerhouses like Netflix, Amazon and — soon — Apple. The Mandalorian will star Pedro Pascal, known for playing Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones (aka the guy who lost that hand-to-hand fight against the Mountain. Yes, that one). The Mandalorian is one of two known Star Wars series planned for Disney Plus, in addition to a Rogue One prequel starring Diego Luna reprising his role of Cassian Andor. The company also has Marvel originals in the pipeline, with programs that center on Avengers characters Loki, Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye. Disney Star Wars Fox Hulu Netflix Tags Post a comment

Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Lakshmi’s NTRScreenshot of YouTube videoRam Gopal Varma has now announced that he would move the Court against the contradictory stand of the Election Commission (EC) to stop the release of his movie Lakshmi’s NTR in Andhra Pradesh. After a month-long wait, Ram Gopal Varma had planned to release Lakshmi’s NTR in Andhra Pradesh on May 1. But on April 30, the Election Commission directed him not to release, reiterating its April 10 order not to screen it till further orders. In reply to the latter’s letter, AP Chief Electoral Officer Gopal Krishna Dwivedi informed that it should not be released until the model code of conduct was in force. This order came as a big shock for Ram Gopal Varma, who has now decided to wage war against the EC. He tweeted, “Point 8C in EC ‘s below letter combined with AP high court judgement is why we planned to release today .we going to court against the contradictory stand of EC now to stop film after giving permission to release for reasons best known to it and we all know the force behind responsible.”Point 8C in the letter of the EC reads as follows:8. Section 126 (I) of the Representative of the People Act, 1951 prescribes that (1) No person shall—(a) convene, hold, attend, join or address any public meeting or procession in connection with an election; or(b) display to the public any election matter by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus; or(c) propagate any election matter to the public by holding, or by arranging the holding of, any musical concert or any theatrical performance or any other entertainment or amusement with a view to attracting the members of the public thereto, in any polling area during the period of forty-eight hours ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of the poll for any election in that polling area.Lakshmi’s NTR is a biopic based on the life of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N T Rama Rao. The movie, which deals with the last days of NTR’s life, showcases Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu as the backstabber of his father-in-law NTR. The TDP got a court order for stalling its release in Andhra Pradesh, while was released in other parts of the globe and received a good response.

Logo of BNPDenied permission for a workers’ rally at Suhrawardy Udyan, the BNP’s labour wing Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal has decided to bring out a rally in the city on Tuesday, marking the May Day.Sramik Dal general secretary Nurul Islam Khan announced the programme at press briefing at the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on Monday, reports UNB.He said they earlier sought permission from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) through a letter for holding a meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan over the International Workers’ Day on Tuesday. “They still didn’t respond to it.”Under the circumstances, Khan said, “We’ve decided to take out a workers’ rally from in front of our Nayapaltan central office at 11am on the May Day.”He said they have already informed the DMP authorities about bringing out the rally.Speaking at the programme, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said it is regrettable that the government did not allow the Sramik Dal to hold the meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan on the International Workers’ Day. “They didn’t give the permission as the word Jatiyatabadi is tagged with Sramik Dal.”He said Awami League does not allow its opponents to hold any public rally as it fears people and their gatherings. “It’s an anti-people and anti-workers government.”Rizvi strongly condemned and protested the government’s decision of not allowing Sramik Dal to hold meeting.Earlier on 21 April, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan announced that Sramik Dal would hold a workers’ meeting at historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on 1 May.The International Workers’ Day, falls on 1 May, will be observed in Bangladesh as elsewhere across the world on Tuesday amid various programmes highlighting the worker’s rights and safety at workplaces.

Photo: AFPThe first eight boys rescued from a Thai cave are in good mental and physical health and are asking for chocolate, officials said Tuesday, although two were on antibiotics after being tested for pneumonia.”Everyone is in a good mental state,” Jesada Chokedamrongsuk, permanent secretary of the public health ministry, told reporters at Chiang Rai hospital.”None of the eight boys has fever today,” he added in the clearest update yet on the condition of the boys rescued from Tham Luang cave. The boys, aged 12-16, were the first to be extracted on Sunday and Monday, while the final four and their coach spent a 17th night inside.Experts had warned of possible long-lasting damage from the ordeal, either through psychological trauma or infections caught in the cave.Jesada said the group had been given x-rays and blood tests, adding that two presented suspected symptoms of pneumonia but were given antibiotics and were “in a normal state”.He said the group can eat, move about, and talk.”They (all the boys) will have to stay in the hospital for one week to wait for their results and to see if anything changes,” he said.Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong, Inspector General of the Public Health Ministry, said the first four boys taken out on Sunday were eating normal and plain food.”They’re asking for chocolate. We can see that everything is ok as they’re eating well,” he said. The boys remain in quarantine but some of their parents have been able to see their children through the glass.Thailand has been riveted by the dramatic rescue mission to save the “Wild Boars” team after they first got trapped in Tham Luang more than two weeks ago by rising floodwaters.Rescuers are racing to extract the rest of the squad and their coach as heavy rains pick back up in the northern province, threatening to complicate the last phase of the mission by reflooding the cave.
Keeter is a guitarist for the Josh Abbott Band; hours before Jason Aldean’s show was shattered by gunfire and bullets rained on a crowd of some 22,000 people, Keeter had played on the same stage. He and his bandmates and crew members were trapped by the violence, and Keeter says he wasn’t sure if he would survive. Some of the band’s crew members suffered shrapnel wounds, Keeter said, because of the power of the weapons being used. They had been standing close to someone who was shot. And despite having their own weapons, they were unable to defend themselves.“We actually have members of our crew with CHL [concealed handgun license] licenses, and legal firearms on the bus,” Keeter said. “They were useless. We couldn’t touch them for fear the police might think that we were part of the massacre and shoot us.”He described writing to his loved ones and creating a living will, as performers, fans, and staff tried to find safety during the prolonged assault.Sunday night’s attack left 527 people injured and 59 people dead. Police say Stephen Paddock brought a small arsenal to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino so he could carry out an attack on thousands of people.“We have recovered 23 firearms at Mandalay Bay, and 19 firearms at his home in Mesquite,” Las Vegas Assistant Sheriff Todd Fasulo said.Paddock is known to have bought some of his firearms at the Guns and Guitars store near where he lived in Mesquite, Nevada. The store has said via a statement, “All necessary background checks and procedures were followed” in Paddock’s purchases. It’s one of several gun shops or firing ranges that have acknowledged having contact with investigators about Paddock, NBC News reports.Keeter’s message found a large audience. It was liked more than 100,000 times and retweeted more than 50,000 times. The message sparked a number of replies, from people asking why other tragedies — such as the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in 2012 — hadn’t changed Keeter’s views. Some responses accused him of lacking empathy and changing his stance only because he was personally affected. Others chastised those reactions, and for criticizing someone who now agrees with them.“It’s frustrating that some don’t call the fire dept until the blaze is at their own front door,” a Twitter user named Heather Maravola wrote. “But we need more ppl on our side. Welcome.”In response, Keeter wrote, “You are all absolutely correct. I saw this happening for years and did nothing. But I’d like to do what I can now.”In speaking out, Keeter also raised the hopes of a Twitter user who said they hope the issue can move from a left vs. right dynamic “to actually enacting common sense gun laws.”Opinion polls have shown large majorities of Americans agree on making several changes to gun control laws, from restricting people with mental illnesses from buying guns to requiring background checks for private gun sales and at gun shows.“Congress has not made a concerted effort to pass gun legislation since 2013,” NPR’s Susan Davis reports, “when the Senate tried and failed to overcome GOP opposition to expand background checks for gun purchases.”Susan adds that so far in 2017, Republicans’ action on guns “has focused on expanding gun rights” — including making it easier to buy silencers and to nationalize concealed-carry laws. And then there are the financial angles. After Sunday’s shooting, the stock prices of large gun makers rose sharply. As Marketplace reported, on Monday morning the “value of Sturm Ruger shares went up by as much as 7.7 percent and shares of American Outdoor Brands Corp, manufacturer of Smith & Wesson firearms, went up by as much as 6 percent.”Those price hikes are part of a cycle that’s fueled by mass shootings, Rob Cox, global editor at Reuters Breakingviews, told Marketplace:“Largely in response to concerns there may be new tightening of regulations on buying the guns, or on gun ownership. And that has actually driven a lot of the buying that actually has given these guys a lift over the past eight years.”Copyright 2017 NPR. NOWThe most deadly mass shooting in recent U.S. history has renewed conversations about America’s gun laws, after one man strafed a country music festival from a high-rise hotel in Las Vegas Sunday. The attack prompted a musician who played at the festival to say he’s changed his mind — and that the U.S. needs new gun control.“I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd Amendment my whole life,” guitarist Caleb Keeter said in a tweeted statement on Monday. “Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was.”Keeter said that one man — who police identified as Stephen Paddock — “laid waste to a city with dedicated, fearless police officers desperately trying to help, because of access to an insane amount of fire power.”He added, “Enough is enough” before adding later, “We need gun control RIGHT. Meanwhile, there are large gaps in income along racial and ethnic lines in Texas: Texans tend to believe more money should be spent on primary and secondary education, including 54% of Hispanics and 52% of African Americans: Meanwhile, whites are making up less and less of the state’s population. This shift is especially pronounced in major cities like Houston: The Texas House of Representatives Committee on County Affairs invited experts to share insights on shifting demographics, voting habits and voter opinions in Texas. Below are ten takeaways from presentations by Rice University Sociologist Dr. Steve Murdock and University of Texas professor Dr. James Henson, who directs the Texas Politics Project.Texas has always been a rapidly growing state, and that’s as true now as ever: Even modest demographic predictions show the Hispanic population will be the majority of the statewide population by at least 2050: When you consider these socioeconomic gaps and changing demographics, Texas could see a decrease in mean consumer expenditures over the next several decades: A plurality from a University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll disapprove of how education has been handled: Share As these demographics shift, Texas lawmakers say they want to make important changes to school finance. So, what do their constituents think? Most of that growth is from Hispanics. As you can see, that population has increased in almost every county across Texas: However, a plurality of Texans say they care more about immigration and border security than any other issue: Those gaps in income are also reflected in educational achievement:
